Starting a blog can be a fun project especially if it’s on a subject you love. Turning a blog into a business is another thing altogether. In 2019 its easier than ever to start a blog and build it into a 5-figure business within the year. Do you want to quit your job to be a full-time blogger?
It’s important to note that like any other business, blogging takes a lot of will power. So, before you get started to get your mindset right and set your goals and expectations. Having set all that, here are some guidelines to turn your blog into a business.
Most bloggers get into the lifestyle category where they pretty much talk about everything. People search online for very specific things and a generalized blog will not take you far. Chose a specific niche and stick to it. Some popular niches include:
Always utilize the google keyword planner tool to ascertain the viability of the niche you chose. Always go for niches with high search volumes and low competition.
As per the example above, blogging in the vegan niche is a very good idea, since a lot of people are searching for the term but there is little competition. Hence it is easier to rank and dominate this niche.
Backlinking is whenever someone posts a link in their article that goes. Directly to your site. This is important as it exposes your content to newer audiences hence more traffic to your blog. Most importantly, it’s a factor used by search engines to track relevant content when people do searches.
A site with most quality backlinks will rank better and get to the top of relevant search results.
You need to build a network in your niche to develop credibility. You do this by connecting with other bloggers who already have authority in your niche. The most important aspect is that you can build backlinks hence enhancing your SEO.
Have a posting schedule and stick to it. Putting up a blog post once a week is okay but I do recommend you post at least three times weekly. This will help with your ranking and help you put more content out in a short time.
Your only job is to provide content that is helpful for people in your niche. Give them hacks, tips and actionable stuff they can implement. If you are blogging about veganism, then offer meal ideas and quick recipes they can use. Learn from there engagements to give them more of what they like. This will keep them coming often to your blog. It’s very important that you install two key tools to your blog at this point. Subscribers will help push notifications and Hellobar will help you start collecting emails from your readers.
Sometimes you put your soul into creating great well-researched content. You hit publish and cross your fingers that this is going to be the one that goes crazy and viral. Then crickets. Well, you need to do more if you want to turn your blog into a business. You get traffic through SEO (Search Engine Optimization), Guest posting, Social Media and Pinterest.
There are no overnight success stories with SEO. It takes time, patience and as long as you do it right then you will achieve great results. Most bloggers don’t take SEO seriously and by working towards your SEO, you are already putting yourself ahead of the pack. You need to know how to use SEO as a blogger to your advantage so your content rank higher. This gives you better short and easily building an audience and turning your blog into a business.
The main things you need to keep in mind include:
As I had mentioned earlier building backlinks is very important for your ranking and you get this mainly through guest posting. Goals for guest posting however to vary:
Being very clear about your goals will be important the kind of websites you need to submit your guest posts to. Think through this a little.
When it comes to social media I recommend at most 4 social media channels to drive traffic to your site. Implement the four as follows
Open a Facebook page for your blog and post your content there. As your community grows engagement will improve, hence more traffic to your site. Also, you can only run Facebook ads from a page and not a profile. If you need to promote a piece of your content then the page will come in handy.
Twitter is an amazing broadcast tool to share your content to the wider audience. My strategy for twitter is searching for content in my niche and replying to them and linking to my content whenever relevant. Do this daily and things start to add up pretty fast.
If you are good on video, start a channel. Providing value to your audience through YouTube might require tutorials. It’s been proven actually that tutorials do much better than other content on YouTube. Use this channel to give your audience step by step tutorials and refer them to your website.
Have fun on Insta. Show them behind the scenes and stuff. Just have fun.
You probably wondering why I did not include Pinterest in the social media section. That’s because it’s not. What most people don’t know is that Pinterest is a search engine, just like Google. Figure how to get your pins to rank on Pinterest and that could be a great traffic channel to your blog. Research shows people on Pinterest have higher purchasing power compared to other platforms. Use this insight to turn your blog into a business with Pinterest.
Pro marketers understand the power of numbers and analytics. Once people start flocking your blog you need to figure them out. Know what they like and then give them more of what they want. This has been made super simple with the free google analytics tool.
If you are going to turn your blog into a business it’s paramount you understand who these people who are reading your bog are. Simple. Just go to your google analytics and check they psychographics, do they like movies, or sports, or cooking. This insight will help you develop content that is relatable hence lead to repeat visits to your site.
Keep an eye on your audience and give them what they would love.
It’s a thing in the make money online space that the money is in the list. If you want to make significant income from your blog the get list building.
1000 is a good number to start giving an offer to your audience on a product you developed or send them to your affiliate links. If you don’t have a mailing list then start building.
I recommend you start with MailChimp and then you have the option of changing providers as your income grows.
You have done all the above. So where will the money come from? I will take you through the best ways to monetize your blog.
Ads on your website is a great way to get started with monetization. It will not get you rich but at least it will bring in enough money to cover the cost of running your blog. Google AdSense is a great place to start and it’s free.
I recommend being an affiliate to only products and services that you use yourself. You are building a community and it’s great to share a first-hand account of your experiences and recommend only the best to your readership.
Create referral links on your site and whenever someone buys through those links you earn a commission. A lot of successful bloggers earn over 5-figure income from affiliates alone monthly. Clickbank and Amazon associates are great places to start today.
This is my favourite way to monetize a blog. It involves figuring out the most pressing problem your audience is facing. Come up with a solution to their problem and package it into a course and charge a premium for it. Simple right?
Well, it takes way too much work to get going and once up you have an evergreen business you can slowly scale to 7-figures.
It is super simple to turn your blog into a business. You just need to have the right mindset, put in the work and be consistent and soon enough you can get out of the 9–5 rut and work on your blog full-time.
Live life at your terms.
